don't really care for newer bands, I'm trying to give Five Finger Death Punch a chance but eh.
so many of the death/black metal bands sound amazing until they sing, don't need you to sound like Cannibal Corpse there's a reason they weren't popular.
Hate bands like NIN, Limp Bizkit, etc etc, way too much hip hop, most of these bands that call themselves metal today are actually off shoots of punk or hip hop rock.

I will on very rare occasions listen to some country, but usually only Johnny Cash, but some other slip in.
never listen to pop, reggae, etc
some classical from time to time, actually one of my favorite play lists mixes metal and classical, very similar.
I listen alot while playing, Metallica always seems to get me great scores, and Pantera makes me want to punch people in the face so good scores there too.
My favourite band is Iron Maiden, than Pink Floyd and Eric Johnson (guitsr virtuoso). I used to listen to Metallica but i stopped becouse of my friends who listen to it over and over again and now i can't stand it
These are my favourite ones becouse they seem to be very melodic especialy in guitar parts. And they are not so "heavy". That's very importatnt to me as I play the guitar. You can find me on yt covering some songs My yt name is same as here.

Rock - great driving music
Metal - awesome late night driving music (normally with the AC blasting to keep me awake...lol)
Techno - rowdy dance music (have to be in the right mood for this one)
Pop - typical dance music
Hip Hop - good dance music or workout music (darn good beat)
Club Mixes - also good dance music or workout music (again good pounding beat)

I can stomach most anything, but country makes me want to drive a screwdriver in my eye.
Far as active listening, I ALWAYS have an earbud in one ear when I'm at my boring job, though I only listen to talky stuff, mostly CBC podcasts: Ideas, Sunday Edition, Tapestry, Dispatches, Wiretap. Though lately I've been listening to 'Lexicon Valley', and the past 50 year of the Massey Lectures - an amazing collection by a variety of ridiculously smart and insightful people. I also sprinkle in This American Life. they have a theme every episode and just people to toss in related mini-docs, stories, etc. Kinda random, usually pretty funny.
I know none of this really counts as music, but I've lost much of my like for listening to music, these past few years. But pasts favourites are Mr Bungle, Aphex Twin, Les Claypools' stuff, lots of classical (both old and contemporary). I despise music that leans on vocals, so I've never liked any 'pop music. Take away the vocals, and it's easy to hear how boring and bland 95% of it is. But I do have a soft spot for the audio quality of 20's and 30's mono recordings.

I have 1 full TB of music, and working on the second at 48% full. I have a PA system and monitors setup in my office with old competition 12" subs for bass, its loud, but crisp and clear, and I can sit in here forever and just listen to music. I listen to a wide variety, and normally you can tell the mood im in by the music im listening to. I have music thats attached to memories, and if I ever need to relive them, I can listen to them and enjoy.

Well ya kinda diverse. I guess like others have said its the mood your in. My favorite genre of music I guess would be alternative. I think the days of the super bands (Aerosmith, Zep,Stones,Doors..ect..) are over. We are left with alot of one hit wonders(ok maybe 2-3) but I'm cool with that.

I think people are too closed minded on Metallica, I mean I LOVE their thrash stuff, but their heavy stuff is pretty good, I don't like St. Anger as much but If I listen to it not as Metallica but as it's own thing it's a decent album. Death Magnetic was a lot better.
