I've got a birthday coming up next month and the wife is asking what I want. So, I think this would be a good time to get some advice on a gaming headset. (Already have the keyboard and mouse). What are some of you using and what would you recommend?

I've been poking around on the internet and I see Logitech, Turtle Beach, Steelseries, etc.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Pretty much anything from Plantronics will serve you well. I'm not a fan of logitech myself.

Sennheiser PC350 is what I have now.  Sennheiser has been, and still is considered a premium source for headphones.  Although the vast majority of experience/existence has been creating headphones for music, the PC350 was their first product dedicated to gaming with mic boom.  Their is a newer model now, the PC360.  They're expensive, but if you place a high value on sound quality like i do, or would use these for non gaming applications as well, then add to your shopping cart

There are so many good brands to choose from...like the others have said, you have Logitech, Tritton, Creative, Sennheiser, Razer, Plantronics, etc...the list goes on...what it boils down to though is what do YOU need?

They all have perks, special features and so on...but are they comfortable? Adjustable? Are the earcups foam or cushioned? How do they really sound? Are there brand names you are familiar with and prefer versus unfamiliar? Do you have a limited budget or the skies the limit? Prices range from $20 to over $300...

One man's tomato is another man's tomato...while one brand may be good for some it isn't for others...you've already taken the best step forward by asking others opinions...also check reviews...then go out to the store and take a test drive...it all boils down to preference...will they be solely for gaming or will you be listening to a symphony/surreal moods cd/rockin to mp3's with them?

When I play, I used my 5.1 Surround speaker setup...adds to the overall feel of the game with the various sounds coming from different directions...that is until the missus tells me to turn it down hence on comes the headphones...and while that Logitech G35 7.1 Surround headset is nice and all (and it should be for that $100+ sticker price), I actually get some nice 3D positioning from a USB Logitech set that cost me $35 at Staples...

I tried the Turtle Beach TBS-2114 Earforce HPA2 5.1 Surround Sound Headset with Amplifier and Removable Microphone....I sent them back, they were horrible. Funny thing, on Newegg, they are now discontinued...Everyone was having the same issue as me.

I now have the Logitech G930 and I Like them. They have a few issues/glitches..but they are minor. I have had them for about 4 months.

Thanks, Cake. I also had issues with a wireless mouse and keyboard once I started doing some gaming.

Ted, since I believe you are the only one with the SteelSeries 5H v2 headset, do you know how to crank up the volume a bit?
I just connected them and I have my volume up all the way and I would say the sound is no more than a medium/mid level.

Currently, I'm plugged directly into the onboard soundcard of this ASUS motherboard.

Any suggestions on tweaks?

I agree with CapZac. Sennheiser is the way to go. I also have the PC350 and it is the best headset I have ever used. I have experience with Logitech, Steelseries & Plantronics, and none of them hold a candle to the PC350's. Yes they are more money, but it's more than worth it IMO.
