For the VAST majority of people these ports do not need to be opened. Modern firewalls open those ports when you make a request to an external location. And you should be very hesitant about opening ports in your firewall- you can open yourself to attacks from outside.

I would like to note that I have not had to open any ports on my computer or my router and I have had Zero problems connecting at any time ... My main computer sits behind 2 switches and then a router then the modem. I am running Microsoft Security Essentails at all times.
Windows 7 64bit
8 gigs ram
AMD Phenom II X6 1075T
ATI 6950 with 2 gigs ram on a HP 24" monitor and Catalyst Version 11.10
Also Did a manual update to punk buster x2 and the 3rd time running the update program no files were updated
The game is completely smooth on ultra settings 1920x1080 with Quality settings in the Catalyst Manager checked.
Was thinking about running some Fraps videos but I really don't need everyone to see who much I die ... lol
I am just not convinced that you need to open any ports manually just for the reasons Ret1957 has listed
But I will say that I have had to open ports to play BF2 and BF2142 back in the Windows XP days.
So my warning is Open ports at your own risk.

Agreed, consult a friend who has major'd in comp security before opening ports o modern modems/router. Unless you don't care about the safety of your system. Or contact your modem/router manufacture.

On the other hand. As long as your antivirus and Windows are up to date you still stand a higher chance of being "attacked" from a malicious website than by having these ports open.

It should not be necessary with uPnP but EA/Dice seem incapable of taking advantage of it. Most single players do not need to "open" these ports but for those of us with multiple players behind a single connection it is a must. My router/modem allows you to set "port triggers" that automatically open/close when specified ports are called from inside my network. That did the trick for my wife and I to play on the same server from behind our firewall.
