The first shots of WWII were fired today 1 September 1939 at Westerplatte close to the Baltic Sea Port of Gdansk. Nazi Germany sparked the war by invading Poland just days after its Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop signed a mutual non-aggression treaty with his Soviet counterpart, Vyacheslav Molotov (Molotov Coctail fame). Soviet Troops then invaded Poland 16 days later in what the Poles call a "stab in the back" acting on the deal with Hitler to divide Europe. Just some trivia guys.
