I just got my new Gateway computer, it has windows 7 installed on it. I can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99. Has anyone upgraded from 7 to 8 and did you have any problems? What are the pros & cons of doing this upgrade?

Tipster, I would love to give helpful advice, but Im not a fan of Windows 8.

Here at work I have performed the upgrade, first off you have to make sure you have the same OS types.  Bit and series(Home, Student, Pro, Ult).  As long as the types are the same or you are going to a higher version you have been great.

As for pros and cons of Win 8.  Its still new, so there are a few issues, performance issues.  But Im sure MS will get them fix in time.

The biggest issue I have with Windows 8 is the User Interface. Its designed for tablets in my opinion.  Which makes it a difficult for non-touch screen units.

Since the traditional start menu is gone, the ability to access some of the more advance features is different to get to, which is Im not a fan of.

Thats just my 2 cents.

Silent said pretty much everything I was going to advise, other than "don't do it".

Evdery second Micrsoft OS is bunk. This has been true since the DOS days. Miostly due to them bringing in vast changes that take a couple eyars to properly sort out, which are remedied in the next OS release.

Not sure if you can do it with an upgrade package, but you coudl always try a dual boot (dual OS) system - they're fairly easy to set up.
