Ok, I'm gonna upgrade my i7 rig with some newer hardware and I was thinking of building a new case. My idea is to make it look like a jet turbine. 1. I think they look cool. 2. Plus, it'll help in with my idea of keeping it cool.
I want to mount 2 huge fans, 1 in front to pull in air and 1 in rear to push air out. I couldn't fine big enough fans that were under "computer case" fans. So, I looked into 12v engine electric fans. It may be a bit loud but I don't care. lol. I want the CFM.
Case believe it or not, I'm thinking of using a 1/2 keg. Good shape to start with and sturdy. Unless you guys have better suggestions for the main body. Just remember, fans will be 12" - 16".. Thanks for reading and I look forward to any ideas you all might have. Pictures are for inspiration.

You think its feasible? I'd like to make the cables come out the bung hole on the side, which will be facing downwards. It'll al be on a custom stand too, in order to keep it of ground and stable. Plus, make rear detachable so I can access components and all that. Inside would be a shelf about half way up. Power supplies, yes plural, would be under to help save space and keep good air flow. One to power the two fans and lights, other to power pc. Am I biting too much off or is this actually a good idea? I've not seen a custom PC like this before.

its a great idea, but is going to take tons of planning.  Im not a faber, so I cant say what is needed to get this done, but from what I do know, your going to have your work cut out for you.

I can see your vision.  First keep in mind you need to either create an access panel to install your components or separate the bottom third using a cutting tool and install some hinges and a latch.

Lots of bondo and blocking could be tricky but if you have experience in reshaping metals you could give that a try.  Another possibility would to cut out the bulky center and weld the two halves for a smoother look. Bondo and blocking would be easier   and less time consuming.

Once you have the shell super smooth you could paint or use some form of wrap of a solid color or a graphic design of your choice.

Just brainstorming to get the creative juices flowing.  Hope this helps.

Alrighty MisterD, I've been thinking... Scary right? The keg's really only wanted for it's shape, right? So, why not just get some sheet metal and form a cylinder? It'd be cheaper and easier to use and find. Plus, no extra modification work needed since build from scratch. Then, get some foam board, make a profile I like, and cut ribs of it to go around outside of the cylinder. Use some light mesh or screen to wrap around it and bondo on top of it. This would make it a whole lot lighter too. Intake would use same technique. Making a funnel shape to "guide" the air to the fan. Exit is gonna be a lil different. Tail cone will house the 2 fan and that's about it. Can use a plastic potting container inverted to form shape. What ya think?

You could get some sheet metal and roll your own.  You have a plan to taper the shape?  You could go all out and make a wing to attach the turbine to and suspend it from the ceiling.  That would look sick hanging above you and the monitor with the huge fan buzzing away.

one quick comment from the drawing looks like 2 video cards - do you want them mounted 90 degrees to the flow of the air from the front fan?  Aslo you may mot want one blocking the air flow to the other...
