I use hitfilm 4 it is the only free video editor I've found that didn't lack features or have some kind of gimmick to buy the pro version. Just make an account here

I was trained on Premier (obviously not free) but the closest I've found to it was Cinelerra (Linux only unfortunately). For Windows there are a few passable ones.

Also, Adobe Premier is a free 45 day trial with no payment info required! Totally worth using for those 45 days.
