I've set up a server for us to play on while we are interested in the game.
I had Braxis give me our Steam Group ID numbers and made this server only accessible to the group members. So be sure to join the group!
To get to it in game when you go to campaign or something you need to select the Steam Group option. It will list the server there. I am looking into installing custom content now.

Awesome, look forward to hopping on there soon when I get my PC back, for the past 8 years I've been subject to Windows XP, 17 inch 1280x1024 DX9 gaming, in a week I'll have my new 24 inch rigged up to my new 5850 w/ windows 7...pumped

Another thing of note, if you want to play by yourself the game makes the other three characters bots. So you are never really alone. Except Strand....he always is...

It should automatically be selected and say Polite & Friendly. Reddragon and I have both connected this way.

I also don't have it in the "play campaign -> steam group server" list but in the bottom of the screen list of group servers

I would also recommend opening Steam and heading to your Library tab. From there go to Tools, then download Left 4 Dead 2 Add-on Support.

Currently I have to specifically choose custom maps if we want to play on them. In the future once we get going I can also add admins for the server in game.

The only way I have been able to successfully join without using the Steam Group option is to use Gametracker Lite and connect from
http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/68.232.166.62:27015/
Edit:
Just got another way working. If you are starting a game on the empty server you can try the following. From the Steam window go to your Library. Then right click Left 4 Dead 2 and select properties. From the General tab select Set Launch Options. Then add this: +sv_search_key "bk"
This only works if the server is empty though I believe. Otherwise you should be able to just join your friends from within the game if they are already on the server.
