MW2 crashing on Windows 7 x64

Hey all. When playing MW2, after some random amount of time the game will crash. When it crashes, I get a white screen and whatever the last sound that was playing continues to play in a loop. Occasionally my GPU fan will instantly go to full power. It does *not* go back to the desktop - I have to power off the machine.

I don't see the issue on any other game. I can play Black Ops all day at 1920x1200 with no issues at all.

I have tracked my GPU usage, fan speed and temps. The usage never goes above 40%, fan speed remains constant at 1850RPM and temp never goes above 63C. I'm using the 'optimal video settings' in MW2 config. 1024x widescreen (I forget the number and am at work at the moment).

I've run a few different burn-in/system test programs overnight, and they all report no problems. Nothing has been overclocked by me, but the video card is allegedly "factory overclocked".

What else should I check/try? I do have the latest video and sound card drivers. I'm using the integrated sound on my mobo. I have a Creative Xfi Gamer Extreme I can try out if you guys think the sound card could be the issue.

Thanks. System description below; let me know if you want any other specs.

-Joe

I don't know if the onboard sound is causing the problems...but you never know.  I would always use a dedicated sound card anyways, since it takes CPU power to run the onboard sound, and especially having an x-fi gamers card...what are you waiting for?...lol.  I would suggest unintalling the game and reinstalling it to see if it happens again...and if it does, we can work on issues from there.

The sound card is in my old rig, which is still running for other reasons.  I haven't broken it down yet.  I'll give that a go and see what happens.

Thanks,

While I haven't had a chance to check MW2 yet, I dropped the X-FI Gamer in there and it made an instant difference in Black Ops.  When I switched to the new PC the server listing screen would freeze for 30-60 seconds when I first started the game.  Now it opens instantly.

So I'm hopeful that was part of the problem :)
